The jubilance was gone but the pride was still evident as Jaguar fans who made the 18 hour trip to Springfield cheered their team as the final score of 74-70 ended ASU’s hopes for a national championship. Cal-Poly Pomona took the game, but they didn’t take our pride in the men’s basketball team who has now taken us to the Elite Eight two times in two years. We have every reason to be proud — and though the national title eluded us this year, the Jags showed they are still one of the top four teams in the nation. Thats something to cheer about.

With the selections, the duo becomes the fourth and fifth All-America selections for the Jaguar men’s basketball program over the last three seasons and the sixth and seventh different players in school history to earn national accolades.

Augusta State was the only program in the nation and the first in Peach Belt Conference to have two players to garner All- America honors in the same season. The Peach Belt Conference totaled three All-America selections with the selection of USC Aiken’s Chris Commons to both squads.

A 7-0, 291-pound senior center from Augusta, Ga., Siler joins former ASU All-American AJ Bowman as the only players in school history to earn first-team, All-America honors by the NABC. Siler leads the nation in field goal percentage for the third consecutive season (.795) and ranks ninth in the nation in blocked shots at 2.7 bpg. On the season, he’s averaging 16.4 points and 7.8 rebounds and was tabbed the NCAA Southeast Regional’s Most Outstanding Player after leading ASU to the regional title in an 85-57 victory over USC Aiken in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Tuesday, March 17.

The only player in the PBC to rank in the top five in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots, Siler has scored in double figures in 21 consecutive games and registered 20 or more points nine times. He has booked a team-best nine double-doubles and led ASU in scoring on 12 occasions. He currently ranks eighth in school history and PBC history with 1,573 points after 25-point effort in Southeast Regional Championship game victory over USC Aiken.

Madgen, a 6-4, 185-pound junior guard from Williamstown, Australia, was named to the Daktronics Third-Team, All- American squad. The 2009 Daktronics Southeast Region Player-of-the-Year, Madgen was also selected first team All-Southeast Region and was a first-team All-Peach Belt Conference pick. He was named to NCAA Southeast Regional All- Tournament team after leading the Jaguars to the Southeast Regional title on March 17. He was also voted the Peach Belt Conference Tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading ASU to the PBC Tournament Championship on March 8.

The league scoring champion at 19.1 ppg., Madgen also led the PBC in three-point percentage (.462), ranked second in free throw percentage (.869), third in minutes played (33.06) and fourth in 3-point field goals made (2.39). He was the only player in the conference to rank in the top 15 in scoring, field goal percentage (12th/.499) and assists (14th/2.85). With 25 points vs. No. 16 USC Aiken in the Southeast Regional Championship game, he moved into fifth place on the ASU career scoring list with 1,642 points and into sixth place on the PBC career scoring list.

He led ASU in scoring on 16 occasions, registered 20 or more points 14 times and cracked the 30-point barrier twice, including a career-high 33 points vs. USC Aiken on Jan. 5.

ASU (29-4) tips off the 2009 Elite Eight on Wednesday, March 25 when the fourth-ranked Jaguars face No. 15 Christian Brothers (25-6) from Memphis, Tenn., at 12 noon in the MassMutual Center.

The top-seeded Augusta State Jaguars got off to a fast start and never looked back as they advanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship game for the second consecutive year with a 77-61 win over fifth-seeded Barton Sunday night. With that win, Augusta State will face USC Aiken on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for a trip to the Elite Eight. It will be the second straight year that the Regional Championship game is made entirely of Peach Belt Conference teams.

With the win, ASU extended its winning streak to 14 in a row and improved to 28-4 on the season, setting a new school record for wins in a season. Barton, champions of Conference Carolinas, saw their season come to a close with a 25-7 record.

ASU hit six of their first seven shots in the game to open up an early 13-4 lead. That lead grew to double digits following a Fred Brathwaite three-pointer that made it 16-6. Barton struggled from the field in the first 10 minutes, hitting three of their first 13 shots.

The ASU lead ballooned to 20-7 following a Garret Siler layup before Barton responded with an 11-5 stretch, five of those points coming from Bobby Buffaloe, that cut the lead to nine. The lead was 10 with 3:07 to play in the half when ASU opened up a 7-2 run with a Ben Madgen jumper and a three-pointer from Daniel Dixon. Two Brathwaite free throws capped the run and gave ASU a 43-26 halftime lead.

Barton’s scoring struggles continued into the second half as the Bulldogs were held to three points for the first 5:21. ASU took advantage, building their lead to as many as 25 on a three-pointer from Ben Madgen and another from Dixon.

A Siler dunk with 11:46 to play left the lead at 20, but the Jaguars went cold from the field, scoring three points over the next three minutes while Barton went on an 11-3 run, four of those coming on back-to-back jumpers from L.J. Dunn, to cut the lead to 12 with 8:11 to go.

The lead remained at 12 with 3:44 remaining after a three-point play from Barton’s Jaren Haley, but the Jaguars put the game away with a 6-2 spurt with another dunk from Siler and free throws from Madgen and Dixon.

Siler led all players with 19 points, hitting seven of eight from the field. The senior also had seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Madgen added 18 and five boards while Brathwaite scored 13 with a team-best eight rebounds. The Jaguars shot 60% from the field in the first half and 51% for the game.

Dunn led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The junior hit seven of 12 from the floor while six of his 10 boards were on the offensive glass. Aaron Suggs added 10 for Barton while Eddie Kershaw scored 11. The Bulldogs outrebounded ASU by one and forced 18 Jaguar turnovers to only 11 of their own.

Augusta State and USC Aiken have met three times this season in PBC play. The two split their regular-season meetings, each winning on their home floor, while ASU won the PBC Tournament Championship over USCA 65-64 on March 8.

Top-seeded and fourth-ranked Augusta State survived a furious late-game charge by No. 8 seed Tusculum, winning 62-60, in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

With the victory, the host Jaguars (27-4) extended their winning streak to 13 straight and matched the school record for wins in a season with 27. ASU advanced to its third consecutive region semifinal, which will take place on 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening. The Jags will face the winner of No. 4 seed GCSU and No. 5 seed Barton. Tusculum finishes its season at 20-11 in just its second NCAA Regionals berth in school history.

Trailing 62-60 with 13 seconds left, Tusculum guard Jimmy Boone came up with a steal of a Fred Brathwaite pass, but his off-balance three-pointer was short with two seconds left. Augusta State guard Steve Smith missed the front end of his one-and-one, but Tusculum was unable to get a quality shot off in the final 1.1 seconds after securing the rebound.

It was the stellar play of South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Kyle Moore that willed the Pioneers back into the game late in the second half. Augusta State led by as many as 17 points after halftime, but a Moore layup cut the lead to single digits, 54-45, with 4:38 left, then Moore hit two three-pointers to make it 55-51 with 1:34 remaining. A 32’ three-pointer by Moore from in front of the Tusculum bench made it a one-possession game, 60-57, with 22.9 seconds left, and another three-pointer by Ryan Troutman with 16.7 seconds left brought the score to two, 62-60, setting up the late-game drama.

Tusculum weathered an early Ben Madgen storm in the first half. Madgen scored 10 of the Jaguars’ first 12 points as Augusta State opened up with a 12-7 lead. Tusculum got back-to-back three-pointers from Moore and a basket by Taylor Hobbs to take a 23-15 lead with 5:46 left in the first half.

Augusta State responded with a 13-2 run at the end of the half, sparked by a Fred Brathwaite three-pointer and a dunk on consecutive possessions, to take a 30-27 lead into halftime. Madgen’s 10 points led the host Jaguars at halftime, while Moore had 12 at intermission to lead Tusculum.

The blistering play by Augusta State at the end of the half continued after halftime as the Jaguars scored the first six points of the second half on a Madgen steal and layup, a Garrett Siler dunk and a Greg Hire driving layup. The 25-4 run covering the final five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half was capped by back-to-back Madgen three-pointers, giving ASU a seemingly insurmountable 42-29 lead with 14:38 remaining.

Madgen led a trio of Jaguar players in double figures with 18 points. Garrett Siler recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, his 19th straight game with double digit scoring. Fred Brathwaite added 16 points for the Jaguars.

Moore led the Pioneers on the night with his game-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor, which included 7-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Rob Troutman notched 14 points, while Ryan Troutman added 13 points on a perfect 3-of-3 night from three-point range.

Tusculum hit 11-of-20 shots from three-point range on the night (55 percent), but hit just 46.9 percent from the floor (23-of-49 shots). Augusta State hit 46.8 percent from the floor (22-of-47 shots), including 7-of-17 from three-point range (41.2 percent).

Augusta State’s Ben Madgen was selected as the 2009 Daktronics Division II Southeast Region Player-of-the-Year, which was announced on Wednesday. In addition to his postseason award, Madgen was also selected first team All-Southeast Region in the process. He is joined on the All-Region first team by ASU teammate Garrett Siler, along with USC Aiken’s Chris Commons, Mount Olive’s Kendrick Beasley and Kyle Moore of Tusculum.

With the first-team selection, all five players are automatically eligible for Daktronics Division II All-American honors.

A 6-foot-4 junior guard from Williamstown, Australia, Madgen was selected first team All-Peach Belt Conference for the third straight season. He currently leads the Peach Belt Conference in both scoring and 3-point shooting percentage at 19.0 ppg., and 46 percent from 3-point range. Madgen is also shooting 49 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line. Last weekend, Madgen was selected the Peach Belt Conference Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, pacing the Jaguars to their first PBC Tournament title since 2002. In addition, he’s also led the Jaguars to their third straight NCAA Tournament berth and to the highest national ranking in school history at No. 3.
